Is Cialis Better than Viagra (and Vice Versa)?

Cialis® (tadalafil) and Viagra® (sildenafil citrate) are two important drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction. If you are unfamiliar with these products, you may find yourself wondering if Viagra is better than Cialis (and vice versa). Only your healthcare provider can determine which one is better for your specific health situation. However, this article can provide you with some basic information on the similarities and differences between the two.

Both drugs have been shown to be effective. For example, in clinical studies, up to 88 percent of men taking Viagra reported an improvement in their erections. Up to 78 percent of men taking Cialis reported being able to have successful intercourse.

Cialis and Viagra both come in the form of a tablet that is taken as needed, typically one hour before sexual activity. Viagra can be taken anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours before sexual activity. Cialis has a more flexible window of time in which it can be taken (1 to 36 hours beforehand).

Cialis is also approved to be taken on a daily basis, regardless of whether you plan to have sexual activity. Neither drug should be taken more than once a day.

Although both drugs can be taken with or without food, you may not want to take Viagra with fatty foods, as they can decrease the effectiveness of the drug.

Another very important difference between Cialis and Viagra is that Cialis is approved to treat enlarged prostate symptoms as well as ED. Viagra is not approved for this use.

Both products are generally well tolerated; however, side effects are possible. Cialis has been reported to cause side effects such as headache, back pain, and indigestion. The most common side effects of Viagra include headache, facial flushing, and indigestion.

At this time, neither medication is available in generic form.
