Damiana and Pregnancy

Although no studies have been done on damiana and pregnancy, do not assume that just because it is a "natural" product it will be safe to use. Natural products can be quite toxic and may have unknown effects on a developing fetus. If you are taking damiana and pregnancy occurs, talk to your healthcare provider about the risks and benefits in your particular situation.

Damiana and Pregnancy: An Overview

Damiana is an herbal supplement that is used medicinally as well as recreationally (to achieve a mild "high"). As with most supplements, it is not known if damiana is safe for use during pregnancy. If you are pregnant, you should not take damiana until more information is available about the safety of the herbal supplement for pregnant women.

Is Damiana Safe for Pregnant Women?

As mentioned, it is not known if damiana is safe for pregnant women. There are no reliable studies that show the herbal supplement is either safe or unsafe, since it has not been adequately studied in any pregnant women or animals. Obviously, the alcoholic form of damiana should be avoided during pregnancy, due to the alcohol content.

Many women try to avoid medications during pregnancy and turn to herbal remedies as an alternative, assuming that "natural" automatically means "safe." However, natural products can be quite toxic. For instance, many poisons and toxins are natural products. It just does not make sense to use an herbal supplement during pregnancy for which there is no information available about its safety.

Keep in mind that just because other pregnant women have used a natural product without problems does not mean that it is safe. A large group of pregnant women taking a particular medication or herb is required to see if it increases the risk of problems such as miscarriages or birth defects, since these problems usually occur infrequently.
