DHEA Drug Interactions

DHEA Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when DHEA is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Hormone Therapy for Breast Cancer
DHEA may make hormone therapy for breast cancer less effective. Do not take DHEA with any of these medications. If you have breast cancer (even if you do not take hormone therapy for breast cancer) you should not take DHEA, since it could potentially make the cancer worse.

Various Other Medications
DHEA seems to slow down the liver enzymes that metabolize many drugs. This means that DHEA could potentially increase the level of such medications in the blood. This is not necessarily a good thing; in fact, it could be quite dangerous. Specifically, DHEA inhibits the liver enzyme known as CYP3A4. Many drugs are metabolized by this enzyme (too many to list here). Therefore, if you take any medications, it is a good idea to ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist about any potential interactions with DHEA.

Final Thoughts

It is possible that not every drug interaction with DHEA was discussed in this article. Therefore, you should talk with your pharmacist or healthcare provider about any DHEA interactions that may apply to you.
