Horny goat weed (Epimedium) is an herbal supplement most often used for sexual enhancement, although some people take it for other purposes as well. Some of the supposed benefits of horny goat weed include the treatment of the following conditions or problems:

Impotence (also known as erectile dysfunction, or ED)
Involuntary ejaculation
Fatigue
Heart disease
Weakness of the back or knees
Osteoarthritis
High blood pressure (hypertension)
Memory loss
Osteoporosis
Various infections, such as HIV, polio, or viral hepatitis
Low sex drive.

How Does Horny Goat Weed Work?

Horny goat weed probably contains numerous different "active" components. Importantly, it contains flavonoids (plant compounds that may have antioxidant activity) and phytoestrogens (estrogen-like compounds found in plants). One of these phytoestrogens, icariin, is a phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitor, much like Viagra^® (sildenafil) and other similar prescription impotence medications.

Benefits of Horny Goat Weed in Children

It is not known if horny goat weed is beneficial for children. Furthermore, children are often more susceptible to the toxicities of drugs and supplements, even natural ones. It is best to consult your child's healthcare provider before giving your child any supplement, including horny goat weed.
