Horny goat weed (Epimedium) is a plant often found in herbal supplements that are used for treating sexual problems such as impotence. It contains estrogen-like compounds; one of these is a phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor, much like Viagra and other similar prescription impotence medications. Since dietary supplements are not as closely regulated as drugs and can be marketed without proof that they are either safe or effective, however, it is not known whether this substance is indeed effective.
