Stendra and Breastfeeding

It is not clear whether Stendra (avanafil) would pass through breast milk in women, or if it would harm a nursing infant. However, this drug is not approved for use in women and would not likely be prescribed for women who are breastfeeding. Stendra is only approved to treat erectile dysfunction in men.

Can Breastfeeding Women Take Stendra?

Stendra™ (avanafil) is a prescription medication approved to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). It belongs to a group of medicines known as phosphodiesterase type-5 (PDE5) inhibitors. Stendra is taken up to once a day, about 30 minutes before sexual activity.
At this time, it is unknown if Stendra passes through human breast milk. However, Stendra is not approved for use in women. If you are breastfeeding, you should talk with your healthcare provider before taking this medication.

More Information on Stendra and Breastfeeding

There is no information on the use of Stendra while breastfeeding. Therefore, it is unknown whether the drug passes through breast milk, or if it would harm a nursing child.
It is important to point out that studies of medications are rarely done in breastfeeding women, as this would usually expose an infant, who will not otherwise directly benefit from the medication, to possible risks. Furthermore, at this time, Stendra is only approved to treat men with erectile dysfunction. Because it is not approved for use in women, it is unlikely to be recommended for a woman who is nursing.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should discuss breastfeeding and Stendra use with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
