When Should You Take Viagra?

For Viagra® (sildenafil citrate) to be effective, it must be taken as prescribed. Before starting treatment with this erectile dysfunction drug, it's important to understand when you should take Viagra and how much to take.

Viagra can be taken at any time during the day. However, you should not take it more than once daily. The recommended starting dosage for treating erectile dysfunction is 50 mg, taken one hour prior to sexual activity. However, you may take the drug anywhere from 4 hours to 30 minutes before sexual activity. In addition, you can take Viagra with or without food.

The medication can begin to work in as little as 14 minutes. For most men, however, it begins working within 30 minutes. Viagra can continue to work for at least four hours, but, on average, the response decreases after about two hours.
