Benefits of Yohimbe
Although yohimbe is often used as an aphrodisiac, it may also have several other benefits. The supplement is claimed to also help treat depression, high or low blood pressure, chest pain, and impotence (or other sexual problems). It is important to note that even though yohimbe is a "natural" product, it may not be safe for use in some people.
Yohimbe is an herbal supplement that is made from the bark of the yohimbe evergreen tree. Yohimbe is frequently used as an aphrodisiac (to stimulate sexual desire) and is often claimed to be beneficial for treating the following conditions:
- Impotence, also known as erectile dysfunction (or ED)
- Sexual problems (in both men and women) caused by selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants (SSRIs)
- High blood pressure (hypertension) or low blood pressure (hypotension)
- Chest pain (angina).
Yohimbe bark is also sometimes smoked in order to achieve hallucinogenic effects.
Yohimbe should not be confused with yohimbine. Yohimbine is the active compound found in yohimbe bark. While yohimbine has been studied in clinical trials, yohimbe has not. Although many people assume that yohimbe supplements will provide the same benefits as yohimbine, no studies have been done to see if this really is the case (see Does Yohimbe Work? for more information). As with many herbal remedies, claims for the yohimbe benefits are sometimes exaggerated, and such claims must be evaluated critically. Most importantly, it is essential to remember that natural products should not be used carelessly, as many natural products can be quite toxic (for instance, many poisons are natural products).
