An Introduction to Yohimbe Dosage
It is important to note that unlike medications (for which the standard doses have been well established), there is less information available for determining the best dose for herbal supplements, including
yohimbe.
Reasonable Yohimbe Dosing
Although yohimbine (the active compound in yohimbe) has been evaluated in clinical studies, no adequate studies have been done using yohimbe itself. As a result, a safe and effective yohimbe dose has not been determined. For yohimbine, most studies used doses of 15 mg to 30 mg a day. Because different yohimbe products may contain vastly different amounts of the yohimbine component, a single standard yohimbe dose cannot be recommended.
Because there is insufficient evidence to guide you in your choice of a yohimbe dosage, a good plan is to start with a reasonable dose (such as the dose recommended on the product label) and see how your body reacts to that dose. If you find that you are experiencing
yohimbe side effects, it may be a good idea to lower the dosage. If it seems to be working a little, but not quite well enough, maybe a higher dose (but not more than recommended on the label) would be right for you. Because high doses can cause serious yohimbe side effects, do not take more than is recommended on the label of your particular yohimbe product.
General Yohimbe Dosage Information
Some considerations for people taking yohimbe include:
- Because the manufacturing of supplements (such as yohimbe) is not closely regulated, it is important to choose a trustworthy manufacturer of yohimbe supplements. It is a good idea to look for the "USP" symbol, as this means that the supplement has been tested and contains the right ingredients in the right amounts.
- If you have any chronic health problems or take any prescription medications, it is probably a good idea to check with your healthcare provider before taking yohimbe.
- If you are unsure about anything related to your dosage or yohimbe dosing in general, please talk with your healthcare provider.
